Flint and Runcorn Rail Stations Improvements

ProGen, commissioned by Transport for Wales, completed £500,000 worth of MEPH upgrades at Flint and Runcorn stations in four months. These included modern lighting, CCTV, fire alarms, heating, customer information systems, and renovated toilets, while ensuring minimal disruption and compliance with Flint’s heritage standards.

Background

Context: Flint and Runcorn stations are essential transit points within the Transport for Wales network. The aim of this project was to improve overall infrastructure, enhance customer experience, and promote sustainability at both stations.

Objectives: The project focused on delivering comprehensive MEPH (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Heating) improvements to modernise the stations while adhering to strict operational, safety, and heritage guidelines.

Project Scope

Key Deliverables:
- Full installation of MEPH systems aimed at improving passenger experience and operational efficiency.
- Compliance with heritage conservation and sustainability mandates in Flint Station.

Methodology

Planning and Coordination: ProGen worked in tight collaboration with the principal contractor, utilising the expertise of an in-house Pre-Construction Director. Detailed scheduling ensured that all efforts adhered to the timelines while keeping the stations operational.

Stakeholder Engagement: A full-time Project Manager oversaw onsite activities, maintaining close contact with the client’s Project Manager and key stakeholders. Daily updates and weekly reports were provided to ensure alignment with project goals.

Execution

MEPH Improvements:
- Lighting Installation: Modern lighting systems were installed to enhance safety and visibility throughout the stations.
- CCTV Installation: a new cctv systems where installed throughout each station to improve security across the stations.
- Customer Information Systems (CIS): Implemented to provide real-time updates and improve customer engagement.
- Fire Alarm Installation: New fire safety measures were installed to meet compliance and enhance passenger safety.
- New Heating Systems: Efficient heating solutions were introduced to improve comfort during colder months.
- New Toilets: Renovation of public toilets to enhance cleanliness and accessibility.
- Public Health Improvements: Upgrades were made to support health and safety protocols in public spaces.
Challenges Addressed: ProGen ensured all works adhered to NR/L2/RSE/02009 standards and the specific requirements of listed building consent at Flint Station to preserve its heritage.
