Grimsby Docks Marine Control Centre

Project Description

Project Overview

Project Value: £800,000.00
Location: Grimsby Docks Marine Control Centre
Project type: Industrial

This project included the design and build of the M&E services throughout the new state-of-the-art Marine Control Centre within Grimsby docks, located next to the Dock Tower. The new purpose-built building provided ABP the means to guide the incoming cargo ships to the port both safely and efficiently.

The Challenge

Both mechanical and electrical services were required in order to complete this project, as each of the three floors of the control centre had to be fitted with LED lighting, power and heating, as well as fire alarm and security systems. The project also included the fitting of a new substation that would provide power to the new transformer and switchgear, which would in turn power the whole building.

The Solution

Equipment supply and installation was an ever-challenging demand to the contract and programming of activities due to the very tight constraints of the project. ProGen not only provided all of the turnkey M&E, but also design services.

The full extent of ProGen’s design and installation responsibility included:

  • Co-ordination and Design

ProGen provided a full design of the HV, LV and mechanical systems, with our in-house design team avoiding any clashes from other services existing on site.

  • HV Infrastructure

ProGen provided the full HV infrastructure for the works, which included SAP duties, whilst the project was ongoing. The project included HV cable containment and cabling with the installation of new transformers and HV switchgear within the switch room fitted out by ProGen. The termination and jointing of the HV cabling was also provided in house.

  • LV Distribution

All LV distribution and switchgear, along with the cabling and containment, was also provided within ProGen’s package, as well as the installation of new LV switchgears and commissioning.

  • Lighting

ProGen provided full cabling and installation of the lighting package throughout the whole of site and roof void.

  • Piping Infrastructure

ProGen provided the full piping infrastructure for the works, which included pipe bracketry and gantries all manufactured within ProGen fabrication workshops and erected on site. The pumps and valves where all designed and erected by ProGen’s mechanical team.

  • Air-conditioning

ProGen designed and installed a full air-conditioning system within the building’s offices and QA rooms, with all the condensing units fitted within the roof void.

The Outcome

This project was a very complex installation requiring many trades to work together within tight timescales. Even so, it was successfully achieved and the building was handed over to ABP on time and budget.
