Hull ABP Border Force Building

Project Description

Project Overview

Project Value: £3M
Location: Hull ABP Border Force Building
Project type: Industrial

This project included the design and build of inspection facilities for customers and Border Force staff, as well as health officials dealing with imported goods from Europe, and covered the construction of a 4.1-acre facility at the Port of Hull. This job therefore required both our mechanical and electrical engineering expertise.

The Challenge

Spencer’s approached ProGen to design and build a full mechanical and electrical engineering service for border control posts at Hull ABP ports. The border force building was needed urgently to cope with the extra paperwork and searches being made to goods vehicles entering the UK.

The Solution

Equipment supply and installation was an ever-challenging demand to the contract and programming of activities due to the very tight constraints of the project. ProGen not only provided all of the turnkey M&E, but also the design services.

The full extent of ProGen’s design and installation responsibility included:

  • Co-ordination and Design

ProGen provided full design of the HV, LV and mechanical systems. Our in-house design team avoided any clashes from other services existing on site.

  • HV Infrastructure

ProGen provided the full HV infrastructure for the works, which included SAP duties whilst the project was ongoing. The project included HV cable containment and cabling with the installation of new transformers and HV switchgear within the switch room fitted out by ProGen. The termination and jointing of the HV cabling was also provided in house.

  • LV Distribution

All LV distribution and switchgear, along with the cabling and containment, was also provided within ProGen’s package, in addition to the installation of new LV switchgears and commissioning.

  • Lighting

ProGen provided full cabling and installation of the lighting package throughout the whole of site and roof void.

  • Piping Infrastructure

ProGen provided the full piping infrastructure for the works, which included pipe bracketry and gantries that were all manufactured within ProGen fabrication workshops and erected on site. The pumps and valves where all designed and erected by ProGen’s mechanical team.

  • HVAC

ProGen provided the full HVAC systems throughout the building, including ducting and air handling units within the roof void to ensure the building met the regulatory air changes needed. The systems where all designed and erected by ProGen’s mechanical team.

  • Air-conditioning

ProGen designed and installed a full air-conditioning system within the building’s offices and QA rooms, with all the condensing units fitted within the roof void.

The Outcome

This project was a very complex installation, requiring many trades to work together within tight timescales, but was successfully achieved. ProGen was further awarded a similar building M&E contract based on the success of the Hull Border Force project.
